Formed in 2012 at the Cleveland Crafts Centre in Middlesbrough, Gilkes Street Artists are a voluntary organisation
focusing on providing affordable studio spaces and support for emerging artists and creative professionals.
A gallery/art space was set up to house temporary exhibitions and projects by visual artists, university students and
local community groups.
For 18 months the gallery was a success but sadly in March 2014 had to close and Gilkes Street Artists had to move after the building was sold to a private developer. All remaining artists have now moved into Brentnall Business Centre, 65 Gilkes Street, Middlesbrough, which is just over the road from the Crafts Centre. While Gilkes Street Artists can no longer provide a gallery space they have some opportunities for local artists to branch out and to aid them in getting their work shown across the country (see opportunities page).
